Parts of northeast and adjoining east India, particularly the states of Assam, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Meghalaya are all set to receive a fresh monsoon spell of extremely heavy rains. Meanwhile, widespread showers are expected to continue over the region for the next 3-4 days.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), northeast and adjoining east India is likely to witness fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, along with isolated heavy to very heavy showers.

The northeastern states have begun the ongoing week on a wet note as well. Between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Monday, the IMD observed rains and thundershowers over at most places over West Bengal and Sikkim; at many places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura; and a few places over Arunachal Pradesh.

As for June 2020, the rainfall over east and northeast India so far this month has been largely normal. Between June 1-22, Arunachal Pradesh (311 mm), Assam (309 mm), Meghalaya (511 mm), Nagaland (186 mm), Tripura (404 mm), and West Bengal (245 mm) have all recorded 'normal' precipitation compared to their respective long-term average figures for this time period.

Sikkim (461 mm), on the other hand, has registered an 'excess', while both Manipur (185 mm) and Mizoram (155 mm) have recorded 'deficit' figures.
