Indigenous Forum, Assam Stages Protest Against CAB

The Indigenous Forum, Assam has observed a sit-in demonstration against Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) at Chachal area in Guwahati. Representatives from Nagaland, Tripura and other NE States have also participated in the protest saying that they won't allow CAB to pass in the Parliament.

It may be mentioned that protests erupted across the state of Assam and other Northeastern regions against CAB and on Friday, KMSS and Indigenous Forum have also staged protests separately against the contentious bill. They said that CAB will not be allowed and that they won't accept CAB at any circumstances which will destroy the culture and heritage of the northeastern region.

Protesters said the bill would breachthe clauses of the "historic" Assam Accord, which states that all illegalimmigrants who came into the country from Bangladesh after 1971, irrespectiveof their religion, have to be deported.

TheUnion government said the proposed Bill will have a cut-off date of December31, 2014, and anyone arriving after this will not be granted citizenship. HomeMinister Shah had said the government will not let a single "ghuspeth"(infiltrator) live in Assam or any other part of the country.

North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convener Himanta Biswa Sarmasaid the Bill "will not override the existing provisions of the Sixth Scheduleof the Constitution or the provisions of the Inner Line Permit (ILP)".
