Pratidin Bureau

The Supreme Court on Wednesday criticized both Centre as well as Assam government on their role to the tackle the issue of deportation of illegal migrants. The court said that the governments have not taken the issue seriously.

"The situation has gone too far. It has become a big joke," said the bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. The bench also comprised of Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna. The apex court further asked, "We would like to know what the Centre and Assam are doing to tackle the problem?"

The SC also expressed its annoyance over the absence of any officer from Assam government to brief the matter and said, "This shows how sincerely the Assam government was considering the matter. It seems nobody is bothered."

The court asked Assam's chief secretary to file an affidavit on the total number of detention centers in the state and how many inmates they had.
