JPC meeting ends: Non-BJP MPs propose amendments to CAB

Pratidin Bureau

Few members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) recommended some amendments to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. They recommended use of the word 'religious-minority' rather than of some specific religion. They further recommended that Assam should be excluded from the Bill.

The JPC on Citizenship (Amendment) Bill on November 20 extended the date for receiving suggestions for amendments from its own members till November 27.

However, BJP members were not in favour of the proposals made by the non-BJP MPs. The proposals were made by Bhubaneswar Kalita, Saugata Roy, Sushmita Dev and Derek O'Brien.

The final report will be submitted on December 5 as the winter session of the Parliament open on December 11. The CAB is expected to be passed at Lok Sabha by the end of the winter session but it will not be a law as it would be blocked at the Upper House.
