With illegal immigrants on the rise in various parts of the country, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh tas urged the Centre for implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state "to check influx of illegal immigrants" and to "help in identification of the local residents", said an official DIPR release.

The statement came as a response to a query raised by legislator K Ranjit at the ongoing 7th session of Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Singh also informed that additional police personnel are using patrol boats and are engaging in frisking activities in Jiribam area along the Assam – Manipur border to keep a strict vigil against illegal immigrants.

"A total number of 79 illegal Rohingya migrants have been arrested by the police during 2011-18, out of which 52 migrants have been sent back after completion of their jail term, read the statement informed quoting the CM.

The remaining 27 are serving their term under the Foreigners Act, Biren added in his response to the query, stated the release.

The demand for NRC has gained momentum since the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) had been passed on January 08 at the Lok Sabha.
