Oldest hippo dies at Assam Zoo

Pratidin Bureau

An oldest hippo, believed to be the Zoo's oldest hippopotamus, has died suddenly on Sunday.

The hippo was among the pioneer animals here. The hippo was brought to Assam Zoo from USA in 1974 at the age of four – as per zoo records.

Zoo officials believed he was the oldest living hippo in captivity at the time of his death.

"It is a difficult day for us. A little like losing a friend." – told Zoo employee.

Hippos tend to live for 40-50 years. The mostly herbivorous and semi-aquatic animals are found in central and southern Africa.
