Parag Kumar Das remembered on 23rd death anniversary

The city on Friday paid homage to writer, journalist and human right activist Parag Kumar Das on his 23rd death anniversary. Family members, fans and followers of Das, writers, journalists and intellectuals assembled near the memorial stone erected at the place where Das was shot dead.

They prayed for the peace of his soul, demanded punishment for those involved in his assassination and recalled his contribution to society. On May 17, 1996, Parag Das, then Executive Editor of the Assamese daily 'Asomiya Pratidin' was killed in broad daylight in Guwahati while he was heading towards his son's school in Guwahati. Notably, Das was killed a day after the Prafulla Kumar Mahanta ministry was sworn in for the second term.

He was the man, who paved a new way for journalism in Assam. Parag Das exposed the corruption of the government and gross human rights violations in the name of anti-insurgency operations.
