SC angry over Assam Kargil Hero branded as ‘foreigner’

Pratidin Bureau

The Supreme Court (SC) today expressed serious concern over the disturbing media reports on an ex-soldier being declared as a foreigner, during the implementation of NRC.

The Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi told the NRC coordinator "There is a deadline and timeframe but that doesn't mean that the officers cut short and just complete the process only to complete it. Merely disposing of 70 percent claims till today is not good unless the disposal is properly done. Please ensure that."

"There are disturbing reports in the media and media is not always incorrect." : CJI Gogoi added.

The Apex Court pulled up the National Register of Citizens (NRC) coordinator Prateek Hajela and directed him to ensure a fair hearing without cutting short the process and thereby completing the same by end of July.

It may be mentioned that the former army officer and Kargil war veteran in Assam Mohammed Sana Ullah, who had won a President's medal was apprehended on Wednesday and sent to detention camp in after foreigners' tribunal declared him a 'foreigner'.
