At a time, when the Congress party is opposing theidea of Narendra Modi-led BJP government's decision on re-introducingCitizenship (Amendment) Bill in parliament, former Congress MP from Silchar andsenior party leader Sushmita Dev said that CAB should be passed keeping in mindthe sanctity of the Constitution.

Favouring the CAB she said that former Assam CM TarunGogoi, during his tenure, had written to Manmohan Singh about providing citizenshipto persecuted Hindus coming from Bangladesh.

It may be mentioned here that Dev's remarks came at a time when a delegation of senior leaders of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) visited Silchar to gather opinions on CAB, NRC, and other issues. CAB was passed by the previous Lok Sabha on January 8,2019 but it lapsed in the Rajya Sabha.
