Tarun, Rockybul may lose AOA Portfolios

The Assam Olympic Association has failed to hold their election and exceeds the term, the General Assembly has unanimously approved to form Ad-hoc Committee for State Olympic Association in Assam and conduct the election as the state Olympic association is bound to abide the Rules and Regulations of the Indian Olympic Association to continue its membership.

The Annual General Meeting of the Indian Olympic Association held on 22.12.2018 had discussed on this issue and proposed: "If any National Sports Federation (NSF)/State Olympic Association (SOA) fails to hold their election and exceeds the term, then the Indian Olympic Association will form an Ad-Hoc Body and take interim measures for overseeing governance and managing affairs of that sport. If that NSF/SOA does not accept this provision it would cease to be the member of the IOA with immediate effect".

The case of Assam Olympic Association was one of these kinds of issues discussed in the Annual General Meeting held on 22.12.2018 as the election of Assam Olympic Association was due.

The election of the Federation/Association member unit of IOA is due when complete a four years term from the date of the election held and the Office-bearers and Council members of the Federation/ Association becomes invalid when they complete the term of four years.

A letter dated 22/12/2018 received from Shri Rakibul Hussain, General Secretary, Assam Olympic Association saying that the Assam Olympic Association is intending to hold General Body meeting on 24.02.2019 in Guwahati, Assam for electing Office bearers.

Further on 22.02.2019 another letter was sent to IOA by the Assam Olympic Association giving the activities of the AOA and also saying that they had already initiated process for holding the meeting on 24.02.2018 (presumed as it may be a typo-error, they may be referring 24.02.2019) at 11.00 am in Guwahati but they failed to give any valid explanation for not conducting the election in time.

In view of the above and esteemed decision of the General Assembly of the Indian Olympic Association, an Ad-hoc committee is formed for the State Olympic Association in Assam with the following members:

  • Dr. Surinder Mohan Bali – Chairman
  • Shri Mushtaque Ahmad – Member
  • Shri Sunil Elangbam – Member

The Ad-Hoc Committee to take interim measures for overseeing governance and managing affairs and conduct the election of the Assam Olympic Association within six months. Electoral College for conducting the election should be prepared in consultation with the concerned National Sports Federation's and shared with IOA for its information and needful.
