Three dead, many injured in Manipur thunderstorm

At least three people died on Monday at different places while at least ten school going students were injured following a massive thunderstorm and high speed wind, that swept Manipur today morning, officials said.

In Churanchandpur district, at K Salemjang village, two woman aged 74 and 50 died after their houses collapsed as a result of the strong wind.

Several houses and market sheds were also damaged during the natural calamity that occurred at around 10 am this morning.

The high speed wind also claimed the life of a woman in Kakching district. The women vendor died after a tree adjacent to her hotel fell and crushed her.

Elsewhere, at two different schools in Kumbi and Kwakta in Bishnupur district, at least ten students were injured due to the high velocity wind. They have been hospitalized.

Officials further said that it is quite early to calculate the extent of damage, loss of properties and the estimated amount of money lost as of now.

Meanwhile, Chief Electoral Officer PK Singh has informed the Election Commission that "immediate relief measures will be required" as just three days are there to go for the second phase of the Parliamentary election.

He also strongly cautioned that no political parties cannot be involved in taking up relief works and that measures will be taken up through official machinery.
