Uproar in Rajya Sabha over Assam’s NRC draft publication

Pratidin Bureau

Proceedings in the Rajya Sabha were forced to adjourn till noon, as a din was created over the publication of Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC) by the opposition parties on Monday.

The Opposition parties, led by TMC and the Samajwadi Party, were up on their feet raising the issue early during the session. Some members of the Congress also joined, creating an atmosphere of complete chaos. Some implacable members moved towards the aisle, resulting in the Chairman warning that the House proceedings would be adjourned if they did not return to their seats.

Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu initially said that he had not received any notice regarding the issue but later revealed that some members had met him previously expressing the need of raising the NRC issue. He then stated that he wanted the Home Minister to respond.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who was present in the House, started speaking but the opposition members did not heed to his words and TMC members started shouting slogans and moved to the well of the House, forcing Chairman Naidu to declare the proceedings adjourned till noon.

The NRC draft list was published on Monday morning at 10 am, revealing that 2.89 crore names out of 3.29 crore names had been incorporated, leaving out names of 40.07 lakh citizens.
