Panchayat: Phase -II voting begins

Voting is underway for the second phase of the panchayat polls across 10 districts of Assam amid tight security on Sunday. Voters were seen queuing outside polling stations in the districts despite the morning chill.

Polling started at 7 AM and will end at 3 PM.

Voting is underway in Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Goalpara, Cachar, Hailakandi, Karimganj and Hojai.

Of 9,428 polling stations, 4,475 are comparatively safe, 3,087 sensitive and 1,866 are very sensitive, informed the state election commissioner. Apart from security personnel, thousands of civil servants are also engaged in the election process.

A total of 64,21,518 voters will cast their votes in the second phases of the elections. A total of 35,056 candidates are in the fray in the second phase.

Altogether 734 candidates were declared elected unopposed, including 442 candidates for the first phase and 292 for the second phase in Assam Panchayat Polls, 2018 – according to the reports of Assam State Election Commission.
