CJI Appears Before inquiry panel

The ChiefJustice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Wednesday appeared before the Supreme Court'sthree-member in-house committee, which is looking into the sexual harassmentallegation against him levelled by a former employee of the top court.

Howeverthe Complainant, after two hearings, walked out of the committee from the thirdhearing alleging that the situation was intimidated and she did not expectjustice from the same as her fundamental rights had been curtailed.

Thepanel, formed after a decision of the full court, has decided to go ahead withthe inquiry even though the complainant has opted out.  It had earlier written to Chief JusticeGogoi, asking him to appear for the in-camera hearings.

In aletter, the complainant said she found the "atmosphere of the committeevery frightening" and that she felt "very nervous" as she wasnot allowed to have her counsel with her or discuss the proceedings with her.

Herdecision came after three hearings by the panel, the composition of which hadbeen tweaked after her objections that a judge named was a close family friendof the Chief Justice.".

Thepanel, headed by Justice SA Bobde, now have Justices Indira Banerjee and InduMalhotra as the other two members.
