PM congratulates Sheikh Hasina on winning Bangladesh elections

Pratidin Bureau

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has congratulated Awami League President Sheikh Hasina on her landslide victory in the 11th general elections, and her re-election as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Following the results, Prime Minister Modi had a telephonic conversation with his Bangladeshi counterpart Hasina, said press secretary of Bangladesh Prime Minister Ihsanul Karim.

He expressed confidence that the partnership between India and Bangladesh will continue to flourish under her far-sighted leadership. Prime Minister also reiterated the priority India attaches to Bangladesh as a neighbour, a close partner for regional development,  and a central pillar in India's "Neighbourhood First" policy.

Hasina's ruling Awami League-led alliance has won over 267 seats in the 300-member Parliament, according to the latest report released by the Election Commission (EC).

Sheikh Hasina thanked Prime Minister Modi for being the first leader to call her to convey congratulations. She thanked India for their consistent and generous support.

It is to be mentioned that the results, announced Monday by the Bangladesh Election Commission, have been rejected by the main opposition party Bangladesh Nationalist Party, which accuses Hasina's party of rigging the election.
