Satya Pal Malik takes oath as new J&K Governor

Pratidin Bureau

Satya Pal Malik took oath as the 13th Jammu and Kashmir governor on Thursday and it has been 10 years that the state has had a new Governor.

Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Gita Mittal administered Malik's oath of office at a function in Raj Bhawan.

Former chief ministers Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were among the more than 400 guests who were present at the ceremony. Legislators, senior leaders of BJP, PDP, Congress and other political parties were also present at the event.

Senior officials of civil administration, police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF) and the Army were also present at the event.

Former Governor of Bihar, Malik replaced Narendra Nath Vohra, who was given a two-month extension after completing 10 years as the governor of Jammu and Kashmir.

Vohra was one of the longest serving governors of the state after Karan Singh, who held the post for nearly 15 years, first as 'Sadr-e-Riyasat' and then as the governor in 1950s and 1960s.

The appointment of a new Governor in Jammu and Kashmir is an indication that the BJP might start a political process up in the valley.
