Pratidin Bureau

The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a petition alleging"dual citizenship" of Congress president Rahul Gandhi. The plea reportedlysought to debar Rahul from contesting the LS Polls as he had "voluntarilyacquired British nationality."

The SC bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi asked, "Somepaper says he has British citizenship so he becomes a British citizen? Merelybecause a company speaks of him as a British citizenship so it means he hasBritish citizenship?"

The petition further sought a direction to ElectionCommission of India (ECI) to decide the question of alleged acquisition ofBritish Citizenship by Rahul Gandhi. They petitioner also asked to remove hisname from electoral roll till the final decision in this regard.

"We dismiss the petition. There is no merit in the petition," the bench also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna said.

Earlier, the Home Ministry had served a notice to the Congress president asking him to clarify his "factual position" on a complaint questioning his citizenship status.
