Transgender activist Gauri Sawant appointed as Election Ambassador

Pratidin Bureau

In first of its kind, the Election Commission (EC) has appointed transgender social activist Gauri Sawant, as one of the 12 election ambassadors from Maharashtra.

Sawant has been appointed as the goodwill ambassador to induce more voters to vote in the Lok Sabha elections and in this case, to encourage more transgender voters.

EC stated that in the next few days, Gauri Sawant would visit every transgender and inspire them about the need for voting.

It may be noted that transgenders got the right to vote for the first time in 2014 after a Supreme Court order.
