Assam’s Directorate of Official Languages to be shut down

Pratidin Bureau

Assam government has decided to shut down the state's eight most important directorates soon. Out of these eight, the most significant one is the Directorate of Official Languages (Implementation), which looks after the use of Assamese language in official works.

Such a decision of the Sarbananda Sonowal government has put the language into high probability of endangerment. At a time when foreigners have been posing threat to the language and Unicode Consortium has deprived Assamese of a separate range, only recognizing it as a supporting language to Bangla; the government is making a move going against the law with this decision of doing away with the directorate.

To cut government expenditure on the directions of the Seventh Pay Commission, the Sonowal government has taken the decision of shutting down eight government directorates with the aforementioned being one.

The office of the Directorate of Official Languages (Implementation) has been put in one corner at the DIPR premises with no new recruitment and no funds. The Secretary of the Home and Political Department Assam has been given the additional responsibility of the directorate working with only seven employees.
