Women’s Hockey World Cup: India holds England to a 1-1 draw in tournament opener

In the opening match of 2018 Women's Hockey World Cup, India held England to a 1-1 draw at the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre in London today.

The World No. 10 side India went on lead in the game as Neha Goyal scored for the visitors while Owsley equalized for the hosts.

India will next take on World No. 16 Ireland on July 26 followed by World No. 7 US on July 29 in their group stage matches.

A total of 16 teams, divided into four groups, are taking part in the tournament. India has been placed in Pool-B, alongside hosts England, Ireland and the United States.

The Netherlands are the defending champions and they are in Group-A with South Korea, Italy and China. Group-C comprises Argentina, Germany, Spain and South Africa, while Pool-D features Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Belgium.

India's previous appearance at the World Cup was in 2010 when the event was held in Argentina. The Indian eves had finished at the 9th position then.
