New Zealand Marks 100 Days of Zero COVID-19 Spread

Pratidin Bureau

New Zealand on Sunday marked 100 days milestone with no recorded cases of COVID-19 across the country.

However, health officials informed there are still 23 active cases present.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said, "Achieving 100 days without community transmission is a significant milestone, however, as we all know, we can't afford to be complacent," and added, "We have seen overseas how quickly the virus can re-emerge and spread in places where it was previously under control, and we need to be prepared to quickly stamp out any future cases in New Zealand".

The World Health Organization has praised the country with a population of five million as an example to others for having "successfully eliminated community transmission".

The first patient was diagnosed in February and the last case of community transmission was recorded on May 1.
