Death toll from Guatemalan volcanic eruption rises to 69

Pratidin Bureau

The devastating volcanic eruption in Guatemala has led the death toll to rise to 69 on Monday.

Guatemala's national disaster agency, CONRED, has increased the death toll as more bodies were being pulled from the debris around the village of El Rodeo, which was most affected by the eruption. Only a few of the victims have been identified so far.

The eruption of Fuego on Sunday was the biggest in more than four decades, forcing the closure of Guatemala's main international airport to shut down.

The Seismological, Volcanic and Meteorological Institute Insivumeh Director Eddy Sanchez said, by Monday evening, the volcano's activity was lessening, and is expected to continue to diminish in the coming days.

CONRED has also launched an online registry of missing people.
