In a historic day for Saudi Arabia, women of the country took the streets early on Sunday morning to celebrate the government's decision to abolish the ban on female drivers.

Saudi Arabia was the only country left in the world where women were not allowed to drive but wrote a new story on Sunday by lifting the driving ban at midnight local time yesterday.

King Salman ordered an end to the ban in Seprtember 2017 as part of sweeping reforms pushed by his powerful young son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The public security directorate reported no unusual incidents one hour after the ban ended. The number of new drivers remains low, as women with foreign permits only began converting them earlier this month.

Others are training at new state-run schools, with 3 million women expected to drive by 2020.
