Sattriya Shines at Vivekananda Kendra in a Soulful Evening of Dance
The banks of the Brahmaputra at Uzanbazar turned into a vibrant celebration of culture and heritage as the Vivekananda Kendra hosted a unique evening titled ‘Nrityarghya’, a tribute to the classical dance form of Sattriya. Gracing the front row was none other than the revered Nrityacharya Jatin Goswami, one of the most eminent exponents of Sattriya.
Organised and directed by Krishnakshi Kashyap, a leading Sattriya dancer and disciple of Jatin Goswami himself, the event featured a mesmerising line-up of performances by young and dedicated disciples of the Sattriya tradition. One after another, groups of trained dancers presented intricate choreographies based on the rich legacy of Goswami's work, filling the auditorium with grace, rhythm, and reverence.
The event commenced at 5:00 PM with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Jatin Goswami, followed by nearly three hours of Sattriya performances by the students of 'Sattriya Kristi'. The performances were met with enthusiastic applause from a packed house of dance lovers, parents, and cultural patrons.
Present as special guests were Swapnalin Baruah, former Director of Cultural Affairs; Bipul Das, renowned Kathak guru; and Sudarshan Thakur, Secretary of Kalakshetra, along with many other distinguished figures from Assam’s cultural sphere.
Speaking on the occasion, Jatin Goswami praised the dedication and precision of the performers and acknowledged Krishnakshi Kashyap’s unique approach to disciplined and process-oriented training. He remarked that her contributions have added a new dimension to the evolving narrative of Sattriya dance.
Krishnakshi Kashyap, a Sangeet Natak Akademi fellow and a well-known figure in the Indian classical dance fraternity, has trained under stalwarts like Jatin Goswami and Ramkrishna Talukdar, both award-winning legends in their own right. Her leadership in Sattriya Kristi continues to nurture new talent and preserve the sanctity of this classical tradition.
The event not only showcased the depth and beauty of Sattriya but also stood as a heartfelt offering to the guru, a living testament to Assam’s rich cultural heritage.
