Anup Chetia Questions Motive as ULFA(I) Camp Faces Deadly Assault

In the wake of a reported armed attack on a United Liberation Front of Asom–Independent (ULFA-I) camp, pro-talk ULFA leader Anup Chetia has expressed deep concern and sorrow, revealing that ULFA-I commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah personally informed him of the incident.

Speaking to the media, Chetia said, “Paresh Baruah called me early in the morning to inform about the attack and expressed his grief. According to him, the camp sustained significant damage.”

He further shared that Nayan Asom, a key ULFA-I cadre, was killed while attempting to save two ailing fellow cadres. “Nayan Asom embraced martyrdom while trying to rescue two sick members from the camp. He died like a true warrior,” said Chetia.

Highlighting that there had been prior concerns about such an attack, Chetia said, “This was not entirely unexpected. A PLA camp had been attacked a few days ago, raising fears that similar incidents could follow.”

He raised questions about the timing and intent behind the assault, suggesting it may be linked to recent geopolitical developments. “There is suspicion that this attack may have been carried out in the wake of decisions taken during the recently held BRICS summit in Brazil,” he said.

Criticizing the lack of coordination, Chetia questioned whether Assam Police were aware of the impending strike. “Surely Assam Police must have had no prior knowledge of such an operation,” he remarked.

According to Chetia, Paresh Baruah also expressed surprise at the incident, saying, “We were under the impression that the government was moving towards initiating dialogue with ULFA. We, too, were considering sitting for talks. But this sudden attack is beyond our understanding.”

Chetia concluded by emphasizing that such matters should be resolved through dialogue, not violence. “This is a political issue and must be resolved politically, through meaningful discussions,” he asserted.

No official statement has yet been released by ULFA-I regarding the attack, and further details about the location and casualties are awaited.
