In a major breakthrough, police have arrested Ankur Das, the prime accused in the grenade blast that rocked the CRPF camp at Panbari in Bokakhat. Ankur was apprehended late last night by Bokakhat police from Dergaon, in a swift operation coordinated with district authorities.
Initial investigations by the Golaghat police had suspected the involvement of habitual poachers and local drug traffickers. However, the probe took a significant turn when Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hinted at the possible involvement of the banned militant outfit ULFA (Independent).
Meanwhile, the Director General of Assam Police (DGP), while addressing reporters, refrained from confirming whether the grenade was detonated using a car or any other vehicle by Ankur and his associate Rupjyoti Das. He stated that the matter remains under active investigation.
So far, six individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident:
Rupjyoti Das and Ankur Das from Bokakhat, Bhavesh Kalita from Tezpur, Sanjeev Baruah from Lakhimpur, Pankaj Das and Kaku Das, brothers of Ankur Das, have also been arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
It may be mentioned that on June 24, a grenade explosion rocked the CRPF camp at Sapjuri Panbari in Bokakhat, injuring three Assam Police personnel.
The injured were identified as Siddhartha Borbora, Sushil Bhumij, and Mintu Hazarika. All three sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Bokakhat Civil Hospital for treatment.
