The Katashbari Veterinary Hospital in Assam's Jogighopa has turned into a picture of administrative neglect and decay, so much so that locals now call it a “haunted house.” As per sources, despite being a government-run veterinary facility, it has remained unopened and non-functional for the past 15 years.
As per locals, since its establishment, the hospital has never had a single veterinary doctor posted there. With no staff, no services, and no maintenance, the once-promising health facility for livestock has been swallowed by dense overgrowth and jungle. The building itself is now crumbling from one side, with broken walls and collapsed portions.
This prolonged inaction by the Assam government’s Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department has pushed local livestock owners into a state of helplessness. With no veterinary services available in the area, they are forced to travel 15–20 kilometers to access basic medical care for their animals.
“The government has completely ignored us,” say frustrated locals. “For over a decade, we have been demanding a functioning veterinary hospital, but no one listens. Our animals suffer, and so do we. At a time when the Gir cattle controversy has marred Assam, this is the ground reality here. The condition of the veterinary department is extremely poor in our area. When will government schemes reach us? We urge the government to take immediate steps to improve these facilities and ensure that veterinary services are accessible to everyone, especially in rural areas like ours."
