Amid mounting tensions surrounding the recent beef controversy in Assam, a six-member delegation of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), led by senior leader and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain, met with Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh on Thursday to express serious concerns over the situation.
Following the meeting, Hussain informed that the Congress delegation has also sought an appointment with the Chief Secretary to raise additional matters. “We have requested a meeting at 1:30 PM with the Chief Secretary. Apart from the beef issue, we also flagged another serious concern with the DGP,” he said.
Hussain alleged that in the Char areas of Dhubri district, several residents heading towards the town, reportedly for medical reasons, were blocked by police. “Barricades were set up to stop them from entering the town, and over 50 individuals have been detained without valid justification,” he claimed.
Calling the incident “completely inhumane and undemocratic,” the Congress leader accused the state government of violating the fundamental rights of ordinary citizens. The party also plans to submit a memorandum to the Dhubri Deputy Commissioner over the same issue.
Hussain went further to allege that the government is fostering a climate of fear. “The Chief Minister is trying to provoke communal tension. He must exercise restraint. We urge the public not to fall into his trap,” he said.
He also suggested that Congress is ready to seek legal recourse if the government fails to act within constitutional limits. “The Chief Minister is making reckless statements because he senses a political threat. It appears he is deriving perverse pleasure from this turmoil,” Hussain added.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Jakir Hussain Sikdar also weighed in, alleging a deeper conspiracy behind the controversy. “A criminal group is actively attempting to incite communal violence under the guise of the beef issue. Why hasn’t the police taken action against them?” he asked.
He claimed that this is part of a larger political design. “This is a calculated conspiracy by vested interests aiming to pit Hindus and Muslims against each other for political mileage,” he alleged.
Jakir Hussain Sikdar also called for increased security measures at religious gatherings. “The government must ensure the installation of CCTV cameras and adequate police deployment at all religious events to prevent any future incidents,” he said.
He stressed that no true follower of any religion would participate in such acts. “No genuine Hindu or Muslim would do this. This is the work of political actors trying to destabilise society,” he asserted.
Calling for immediate legal action, he said, “The real masterminds must be identified and brought to justice. The government cannot remain a silent spectator.”
