The Indian National Congress on Sunday announced a major organisational revamp in Assam, with the constitution of a new Political Affairs Committee and the appointment of key office bearers and district presidents for the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). The newly formed Political Affairs Committee of the Assam Congress will be chaired by senior party leader and AICC in-charge Jitendra Singh. The committee comprises several prominent leaders from the state, including Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, CLP leader Debabrata Saikia, APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah, former minister Rakibul Hussain, and veteran parliamentarians like Paban Singh Ghatowar and Ripun Borah.

Other members of the committee include Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Rosilina Tirkey, Pradeep Sarkar, Abdul Khaleque, Pranatee Phukan, Balin Kuli, Nandita Das, Ranee Narah, Wazed Ali Choudhury, Ajit Singh, and Arun Dutta Mazumdar.

The committee also includes all AICC secretaries in charge of Assam as permanent invitees. Former ministers Prithvi Majhi and Tanka Bahadur Rai, along with former bureaucrat and political figure Pradyut Bora, have been named as special invitees. Additionally, heads of all frontal organisations of the party will be part of the extended body.

The appointments come at a crucial time for the Congress as it gears up for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. The reconstitution is seen as an attempt to streamline organisational strength and consolidate support across key constituencies in the state.

Further details on the newly appointed district presidents and office bearers of the Assam Congress are expected to be shared by the party shortly.
