GRP Foils Arms Smuggling Bid at Guwahati Station, 3 Pistols Seized
In a significant pre-Independence Day security breakthrough, the Government Railway Police (GRP) recovered three illegal firearms from Guwahati Railway Station on Friday afternoon.
Acting on intelligence inputs, the GRP team conducted a swift operation around 12:45 PM on the foot overbridge of Guwahati Railway Station, where they apprehended a suspect in possession of deadly weapons. The accused has been identified as Golu Kumar, son of Kundan Yadav, a resident of Mathar, Khagaria district, Bihar.
During the search, police recovered three 7.65 mm pistols and six magazines from Golu Kumar's possession. Preliminary investigation suggests that the accused had transported the weapons from Bihar to Assam and was allegedly waiting at the station to hand them over to another person.
The recovery has raised serious concerns about the potential trafficking of illegal arms ahead of the Independence Day celebrations, a period of heightened security across the state and the nation.
GRP officials suspect the firearms were meant to be delivered to unknown individuals within Assam and are currently probing the broader network involved. The accused is being interrogated to trace the source and intended recipients of the weapons.
Security has been tightened in and around the Guwahati Railway Station following the incident, and surveillance has been increased at key transit points.
