Historic Reunion of Dima Hasao's Ex-MACs Sparks Call for District Reforms
In a landmark gathering, the Ex-MACs' Association of Dima Hasao organised a grand get-together programme today at Hojai's Farm Land on the banks of the Diyung River. The event saw the enthusiastic participation of nearly 40 former public representatives, including Ex-CEMs, Ex-Chairmen, Ex-EMs, and Ex-MACs of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC), Haflong.
One of the major highlights of the meeting was a detailed discussion on the ongoing High Court case concerning the pension rights of Ex-Members. The issue was deliberated thoroughly, with members expressing concern over the delay in securing rightful benefits.
The gathering also took serious note of various pressing issues plaguing the district, including the alarming rise in criminal activities such as kidnappings and secret killings, as well as the growing menace of drug abuse among youth. Another point of concern was the perceived erosion of Sixth Schedule powers under the present BJP-led government, which members claimed was weakening the autonomy of the district council.
In response to these concerns, the association unanimously resolved to stage a peaceful sit-in demonstration near the office of the Deputy Commissioner in the first week of August 2025. A memorandum will be submitted to the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Assam through the DC, voicing the collective demands and concerns of the former representatives.
To ensure the financial sustainability of the association, it was also decided that a membership fee of ₹100 per member per month would be collected starting from August 2025.
The programme concluded with a lunch session around 3 PM, providing an opportunity for former colleagues to reconnect and reflect on their shared legacy. Smiles and heartfelt conversations marked the event, which was hailed by many as a historic and emotional success.
Members parted with a renewed sense of solidarity and a hopeful commitment to meet again at next year’s reunion.
