IIT-G Developes Fuel Saving Burner, Out For Production

An energy-efficient and environment-friendly technology for cooking stoves was developed in Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G). It has now been transferred to an industry partner for production and commercialisation.

The P Muthukumar headed research team from the department of mechanical engineering, IIT Guwahati, had developed 'Porous Radiant Burners' for cooking stoves, capable of reducing fuel consumption in the range of 25% to 50%. The burners can function on LPG, Kerosene and Biogas.

IIT Guwahati said, "The MoU for this technology transfer was signed on Thursday. This effort will be major contribution of IIT Guwahati towards the government's efforts to enhance access to clean cooking energy by promoting LPG, biogas and improved cook-stoves (ICS) through various policies and programs."

M/s. Agnisumukh Energy Solutions Private Ltd, Bangalore, were given the technology for commercialization.

P Muthukumar told TOI that these locally made cookstoves, which are equipped with specifically constructed double layered PRBs, save 25-50 percent on fuel and cut emissions by roughly 80 percent. For both domestic and community/commercial cooking, the newly developed PRB is excellent for gaseous fuels like as LPG, biogas, and PNG, as well as liquid fuels such as kerosene, methanol, and ethanol, he said while talking about the unique points.

The new technology will play an important role in reducing the fuel consumption leading to huge savings of about 50,000 annually, according to T. G. Sitharam, director of IIT Guwahati.
