A journalist from a private satellite channel of Assam was reportedly assaulted by a group of miscreants while covering a report on the formation of a panchayat in the Dhemaji district on Friday.
The victim has been identified as Madhurjya Saikia, a journalist from Silapathar. The incident took place at the premises of the Dimow Panchayat under Jonai constituency, where the journalist had gone to gather information.
As per sources, the attack was led by a group of 25–30 miscreants under the leadership of Tilak Doley and Mintu Doley, who are reportedly associated with the Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), a prominent Mising student organisation.
The assailants allegedly launched the attack in full public view, targeting Madhurjya Saikia for his reporting activities. In what could have turned tragic, the journalist narrowly escaped with his life.
Meanwhile, an FIR has been lodged at the Silapathar police station in connection with the incident.
On the other hand, the incident has drawn widespread condemnation from multiple journalist associations, political parties, and civil society organisations across the state. The incident has also once again raised concerns over the safety of journalists in Assam, particularly those reporting from remote or politically sensitive regions.
