Three Fake Doctors Caught Practicing Illegally in Separate Raids

In a significant crackdown on unauthorized medical practice, two individuals were apprehended by Jorhat Police on July 9, 2025, following complaints submitted by Dr. Abhijit Neog, Anti-Quackery & Anti-Vigilance Officer of the Assam Council of Medical Registration.

In 2023, Dr. Abhijit Neog, Anti-Quackery and Anti-Vigilance Officer of the Assam Council of Medical Registration, filed a petition in the Gauhati High Court urging action against the rampant rise of fake medical practitioners across the state. Acting on the petition, the Gauhati High Court directed the formation of a dedicated body to identify and expose such fraudulent doctors.

Following the court's directive, a special task force was constituted under Dr. Neog’s supervision. Since then, the task force has been working closely with the police to bust fake doctors operating across Assam, particularly in vulnerable areas.

Dr. Neog, who had earlier independently exposed the fake identities of over 35 such individuals, continues to lead the mission with active ground surveillance. Speaking to the media, he said, "Most of the individuals posing as doctors usually operate in tea garden belts, rural areas, and even within Guwahati city. Initially, we found many of them in plantation areas where medical scrutiny was minimal. But now, checks have been strengthened significantly."

He further revealed a concerning trend: "Some of these fake doctors are even employed in private nursing homes as resident doctors. Shockingly, in many instances, the management fails to verify their qualifications. Our team has managed to expose several such cases."

Dr. Neog emphasized that rural and remote areas remain more vulnerable, as the local population often lacks the means to verify a doctor's credentials. “In such regions, it becomes easier for these fraudsters to hide their true identity and pose as medical professionals,” he added.

So far, a total of 46 fake doctors have been identified and apprehended with the help of the police.

Dr. Neog warned that these individuals are not only breaching public trust but are also putting lives at risk. Legal proceedings have been initiated against all those found impersonating qualified medical professionals.

The arrested individuals on July 9 have been identified as: Amar Jyoti Nath (38), son of Sri Upen Nath, a resident of Bahona Tiniali, Jorhat; and Ashok Kumar Gogoi (46), son of Late Prasanna Kumar Gogoi, residing at Jail Road, Samannay Path, Jorhat.

According to the complaint, both were allegedly engaged in practicing medicine without possessing the requisite qualifications or valid registration with the statutory medical authority.

Following preliminary investigation, the Jorhat Police registered two separate cases against the accused under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 319(2), 316(2), 336(2), 125, and 271.

Case No. 325/2025 and Case No. 326/2025

Both individuals are currently in custody, and legal proceedings have been initiated as per the relevant provisions of law.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to strict action against quackery and urged citizens to report any suspicious medical practices in their locality.

Meanwhile, another fake doctor posing as a qualified medical practitioner was arrested in Dagaon, under Juria police station, for allegedly treating children without any valid medical degree.

The accused, identified as Bimal Sutradhar, had been operating from Mahmuda Medical Hall in Dagaon. According to local reports, he had put up a nameplate claiming to be a qualified doctor and was treating pediatric patients despite lacking any formal medical education or registration.

Acting on credible information, the Juria Police apprehended Bimal Sutradhar today. Following his arrest, he was produced before the court and subsequently sent to judicial custody.

Authorities have expressed concern over the growing menace of unqualified individuals practicing medicine and endangering lives. An investigation is underway to uncover if more such illegal medical setups are operating in the region.
