Assam Brahmins Demand Action Over Shankaracharya’s Beef Remarks
The Assam unit of the All India Brahmin Front (AIBF) has filed a formal complaint condemning the recent controversial remarks made by Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati of Govardhan Peeth, Puri, Odisha. The complaint was lodged at the Dispur Police Station in Guwahati.
The organisation stated that such remarks are not only factually incorrect but also deeply offensive to the Brahmin community of Assam, which has followed age-old Sanatan traditions with devotion and reverence. According to the AIBF, there exists no historical or cultural precedent of beef consumption among Brahmins in the state.
Reacting to the remark, Akhil Bharat Brahmin Front's General Secretary Pavitra Kumar Sharma strongly criticised the Shankaracharya’s comments, calling them "baseless, misleading, and deeply hurtful to the sentiments of the Brahmin community across Assam." He warned that such unverified claims from a religious figure of national stature could inflame social tensions and damage communal harmony.
The AIBF’s complaint further highlighted that in Assam, cows are revered as mother figures and hold a sacred place in the spiritual and cultural life of Brahmins. The community has long upheld Sanatan values, performing rituals such as puja, yajna, and other sacred offerings using cow-derived products like ghee, curd, and milk. Additionally, cows play a vital role in agriculture and are integral to the rural livelihoods of many Brahmin households.
The organisation alleged that the Shankaracharya’s statement has caused widespread emotional distress within the community and could potentially lead to unrest. They revealed that some members were so disturbed by the remark that there were fears of extreme emotional consequences, including suicidal thoughts.
AIBF also mentioned that they had previously requested the Shankaracharya to present evidence supporting his claim and issue a public apology. However, neither proof nor an apology has been offered so far.
In its memorandum, the AIBF demanded immediate legal action against the Shankaracharya and urged the authorities to consider his arrest. The organisation cautioned that failure to address the issue promptly could escalate into a serious law and order situation. If corrective measures are not taken, the Brahmin community may be forced to launch widespread protests in Assam.
