At least three people have lost their lives and several others are feared trapped after a portion of a bridge collapsed in Gujarat’s Anand district early Wednesday morning. The bridge, known as the Gambhira bridge, is situated on the Mahisagar river and forms part of a key state highway route.
Reportedly, the incident occurred around 7:30 am, causing multiple vehicles to plunge into the river below. According to officials, at least four vehicles, including two trucks and two vans, were on the bridge when it gave way.
"Around four vehicles fell into the river after a portion of the bridge on the Mahisagar river collapsed around 7.30 am. The vehicles, including two trucks and two vans, fell into the river. We have rescued four persons so far," said Padra police inspector Vijay Charan.
The bridge is located approximately 25 km from Vadodara city and is frequently used by heavy transport vehicles commuting towards the Saurashtra region.
Rescue operations were immediately launched by local police teams, fire brigade units, and disaster response forces, who rushed to the site to aid the trapped victims.
"A portion of the bridge collapsed suddenly. Three vehicles that were passing from that stretch fell into the river below. We have initiated rescue operations and 10 have been pulled out of the river," a fire brigade officer confirmed.
As the rescue efforts continue, the exact number of people trapped remains uncertain.
