Professor Ramesh Chandra Deka, Vice Chancellor of Cotton University, was officially bestowed the rank of Honorary Colonel and appointed Colonel Commandant of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) during a formal Rank Pipping Ceremony held on the university campus on June 20.
The recognition, conferred by the Government of India, honours Prof Deka’s outstanding contributions to youth development and his steadfast support for NCC activities. He stands as the only Vice Chancellor in the North East to receive this rare distinction in 2025.
The prestigious ceremony was graced by senior officials from the NCC, including Brigadier Ajit Kumar Borah, VSM, Group Commander of NCC Group Headquarters Guwahati; Colonel Ajay Kumar Sharma, Commanding Officer of 60 Assam Girls Battalion NCC; and Wing Commander Huvey Upadhyaya, SC, Commanding Officer of 50 Assam Air Squadron NCC. The ceremonial pipping of ranks was jointly carried out by the dignitaries, following which Prof Deka was formally presented with a certificate from the Director General of NCC and a special DO letter.
NCC cadets from the 60 Assam Girls Battalion and 50 Assam Air Squadron turned out in impressive numbers to witness the event. The programme included a meticulously coordinated ceremonial sequence, with cadets anchoring the proceedings and showcasing the trademark discipline and enthusiasm of the NCC.
Speaking at the occasion, Brigadier Ajit Kumar Borah praised Prof Deka’s unwavering commitment to the values and mission of the NCC. “This honour goes beyond ceremonial formality. It symbolises Prof Deka’s deep involvement in empowering the youth and his dedication to nation-building through the values of discipline, leadership, and service. His presence in the NCC family will further encourage cadets to excel in both academics and national service,” he said.
In his acceptance address, Prof Deka expressed deep gratitude to the Government of India and the NCC leadership. “It is a tremendous honour to receive this symbolic yet significant role. I have always believed in the transformative power of youth and the vital role NCC plays in shaping them into responsible citizens. I am proud to now contribute more directly to this noble mission,” he said.
The ceremony marked a proud milestone for Cotton University and added another chapter to the region’s growing association with national institutions. Prof Deka’s appointment reaffirms the shared commitment to blending academic excellence with disciplined leadership, further strengthening the bond between educational institutions and the country’s premier youth organisation.
