India has cut down its imports from China by a significant margin in the April-July period in 2020.

As informed by the Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in Rajya Sabha during the Monsoon session of the Parliament, India's imports reduced to $16.60 billion from $23.45 billion in the same period last year.

When asked whether this 27% slash in the volume of imports from China was a step towards promoting the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' policy of the government, the Minister replied in affirmative and said that the government was determined to make 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India' initiatives a success.

The decision to reduce Chinese imports by such a wide margin also comes in the backdrop of both the countries being locked in a border row in the Eastern Ladakh area along the LAC.

As informed by the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently at the Parliament, China is in illegal occupation of some portions of Ladakh. However, the Indian Army, in a strategic win, has meanwhile managed to occupy certain major heights in the area which would give it an edge over the Chinese PLA, which was also vying for the same heights.
