Emmys 2018: ‘GoT’ wins best drama series award

Pratidin Bureau

The fantasy drama Game of Thrones won the award for the 'outstanding drama series' at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Producer David Benioff and  D.B. Weiss took to the centre stage accepting the award on behalf of the series. Benioff thanked author George R. R. Martin, who Weiss said owes much of the TV show's success. He also gave a shout-out to HBO: "There's no better place to work."

"Writing for these actors behind us is the honor of a lifetime," Benioff said. "But we didn't invent these characters. That was George R.R. Martin. The show could not be, without the mad genius of George".

Game of Thrones beat out tough competition, including The Americans, The Crown, Stranger Things, This Is Us, Westworld and The Handmaid's Tale — the Elizabeth Moss-starring series that took home the same trophy last year.

With 46 Primetime Emmy Awards, including 'Outstanding Drama Series' in 2015, 2016, and 2018 GoT received more awards than any other primetime scripted television series.

The eight season of the fantasy drama series will premier in 2019.
