12-Hour Barak Bandh Observed

Pratidin Bureau

Barak Valley is advancing a 12-hour bandh on Saturday in protest against the recent killing of a resident Cachar district in Mizoram.

The All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students' Association (ACKHSA) on Tuesday had called for a 12-hour Barak Valley bandh today from 5 am to 5 pm.

The student body's adviser Rupam Nandi Purakayastha said, "This bandh is called protesting the attempts made by the Mizos to encroach upon Assam territory and the killing of a person from Cachar in the neighbouring State," adding, "China too has added to the already present conflict along the Assam-Mizoram border and a conspiracy is being hatched to fuel unrest in Assam".

The student leader also urged the Centre to impose President's Rule in the border areas and involve the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to investigate the recent incidents there.

Meanwhile,  security has been intensified in Silchar and other parts of Assam's Cachar districtahead of the 12-hour Barak bandh on Saturday, a government order said.
