AGP delegation meets JPC members

Pratidin Bureau

A team of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leaders, led by President Atul Borah had left for New Delhi on Sunday.

The delegation will meet members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 – as per sources. This afternoon, the delegation has met another JPC member Swapan Dasgupta.

While the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre is trying to push the bill, the AGP, a NEDA constituent and the BJP's alliance partner in the Assam government, is opposing it.

Few days ago, a representatives' group of AGP had met Rajendra Agwarwal, the chairman of Joint parliamentary committee (JPC) in Meerut. The team had submitted a memorandum against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill to JPC chairman Rajendra Agwarwal on behalf of AGP and their wings

AGP delegation comprised of former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, party president Atul Bora and other senior party leaders had met Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and the CM assured support to AGP over opposition to Citizenship Bill.

However opposition parties like Congress, AIUDF claimed that AGP is maintaining a 'secret' understanding with the BJP for the forthcoming panchayat elections.
