AGP’s Rajya Sabha hope jeopardized?

Pratidin Bureau

After Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) failed to win a single seat in the Lok Sabha Elections 2019, it seems that the party's route to Rajya Sabha has been jeopardized. Taking a note of the people's verdict in the LS Polls, the AGP leaders on Friday visited their BJP counterparts to congratulate them on their massive victory in the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 and to indirectly remind them of their agreement on a Rajya Sabha seat.

AGPleaders including president Atul Bora, Keshab Mahanta, Assam Minister Fani BhusanChoudhury and others visited Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance MinisterHimanta Biswa Sarma at their respective residences in Guwahati.

However, experts feel that the visits were much more than being a mere congratulatoryvisits. With the Rajya Sabha Elections for two Assam seats likely to be held inthe month of June, the experts say that the AGP leaders visited the BJP camp topersuade the latter for reserving at least one Rajya Sabha seat for theregional party.

Speaking to media, AGP president Atul Bora on Friday said that though there were no discussions held regarding Rajya Sabha elections, yet they are hopeful of getting a seat as per their agreement prior to the Lok Sabha Elections.

On the other hand, though AGP leaders are hopeful of getting a ticket for the Rajya Sabha seat, the State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass on Thursday strongly refrained from answering any question regarding seat sharing in the Rajya Sabha elections, corning AGP's expectation. Also BJP is unlikely to give any seats to AGP as most likely the LJP candidate Ram Vilas Paswan will be sent to Rajya Sabha from Assam. The other seat will surely go to a BJP candidate.
