Arunachal To Oppose CAB “Unequivocally”

TheBJP government in Arunachal Pradesh has indicated that it will "unequivocally"oppose the legislation unless specific amendments are made. This comes two daysafter the BJP's ally in Assam, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which had opposedthe bill earlier this year as well, said it too would not support the bill. Protestswere also recorded in Manipur after an 18-hour bandh was called on Tuesday.

TheArunachal Pradesh government, after a final meeting of a consultative committeeon CAB attended by political parties, student and youth bodies andcommunity-based organizations in the state, has asked the Centre to includeprovisions of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873 and the Chin HillsRegulation of 1896 in the citizenship bill.

Accordingto a statement released by chief minister Pema Khandu's government, it said, "Allprovisions (of the 1873 Regulation)…shall be deemed to have been enacted underthis (citizenship bill) act and shall have effect accordingly."

Theletter to the centre said that the inclusion of these two regulations werenecessary to protect the indigenous tribal people of Arunachal Pradesh.

However,the final meeting was chaired by Bamang Felix, Arunachal Home Minister andChairman of CAB 2019 consultative committee.

ArunachalCM will also visit Delhi to appraise the Union Home Ministry on the decision ofthe people of Arunachal Pradesh in regard to the citizenship bill.

Sources have said the BJP is likely to hold a consultative meeting with its regional allies. Before tabling the bill, the party wants to build consensus among its partners over the issue.
