Assam: 350 Foreigners Released due to COVID-19 Outbreak

Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai on Monday said that 350 declared foreigners in different detention centers in Assam have been released on bail from April 13 till date during the coronavirus pandemic.

Rai while replying to a query of MP Vaiko at the Rajya Sabha regarding the Supreme Court order of release of foreigners from the detention centers in Assam due to COVID-19 outbreak, Rai said that the top court had passed an order dated 13.04.2020 in Suo Moto Writ Petition (Civil) No.1/2020 in RE: CONTAGION OF COVID 19 virus in prisons directing that the prisoners or detainees who have been under detention for two years shall be entitled to be released subject to fulfillment of stipulated conditions including furnishing of a bond of Rs. 5000 (Rupees five thousand only) with two sureties of the like sum of Indian Citizens.

Rai further stated that 15 detainees of different Detention Centers in the state Assam had died due to illness during the last two years till September 16 while undergoing treatment in various hospitals of the state.
