125 dead so far in Assam hooch tragedy

The hooch tragedy of upper Assam is spiralling out of control as it claimed so far 125 lives and threatening to touch 150 as more and more affected people lost their lives forcing the government to rush doctor from Nagaon Tezpur and Dibrugarh to meet with the crisis.

In Golaghat district the death toll has crossed 85 while in Jorhat nearing 35so far with more than 158 battling for life.

The Assam health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that Jorhat Mecial College Hospital would only admit the serious patients to concentrate on the 100 odd people struggling for lives.

More and more people are coming to the hospital complaining of acute pain and the latest count found 158 patient. The Health minister visited the spot today and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is rushing there while Minister Tapan Gogoi, MLA Mrinal Saikia and MP Kamkhya Tasa have been camping there to help the authorities to control the situation.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal ordered a high-level inquiry into the Salmara incident while the Excise Department raided several places at night for illegal liquor. He has also announced Rs 2 lakh ex gratia to each of the victims.

"It is an extremely painful incident. A high-level probe is being set up, which should be able to determine the cause of incident and lapses which could have led to such an incident", said the CM.

Dr Sharma informed that besides the patients, the Government will also take care of the attendants.
