U Gunawantha Mahathera popularly known as Bhante Baba passed away on Saturday evening at a private hospital in Margherita, who was just two days away from his 100th birthday.

U Gunawantha Mahathera popularly known as Bhante Baba resided at Mounglang Khamti Buddhist Monastery at Ledo.

Baba's mortal remains have been kept at the monastery for people to pay their last tributes and the date of his last rites will be decided today in a meeting at the monastery.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed his grief on the demise of Bhante Baba.
