The 'Ranahungkar'programme organized by the students of Cotton University against thecontentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) has been started with hundreds ofpeople participating in the protest.

Various sections of people including Assam heartthrob Zubeen Garg and the students of JNU, Delhi University, and other universities and colleges have extended their support to the protest rally organized by Cotton University.

Addressing theprotest rally, Representatives from Gauhati University said, "This is not a waragainst Bengali community, this is a war to protect our motherland from illegalimmigrants."

Artists fromvarious fields including Tarali Sarma, Manas Robin, Amrita Gogoi, SeniorJournalist Ajit Bhuyan, Social activist Udayaditya Bharali are among others whoparticipated in the protest rally.

Zubeen Gargin a video message extended his support to the programme. He further urged allsections of people, especially the student community to take part in theprotest rally.

Recently, thestudents of Cotton University also staged a protest march in the city demandingthe withdrawal of the bill from Parliament. They said that the bill would harmthe Assamese community in the future.

The CAB seeks to amend a 1955 law to grant citizenship to persecuted Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Pakistan if they have lived in India for six years; and students of Cotton University along with other organizations have been continuously opposing the bill.
