DGP Kuladhar Saikia To Retire today

Assam Director General of Police (DGP), Kuladhar Saikia toget retirement today on November 30.

The Assam government gave an extension of three months tostate Director General of Police (DGP), Kuladhar Saikia, just a day ahead ofthe final publication of the National Register of Citizens in Assam on August30.

The top cop, who was slated to retire from his service onAugust 31 this year, got an extension after the appointments committee of theCentral Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved to the proposalof the Union ministry of home affairs seeking extension of Saikia's servicewith additional three months considering it as a special case in the interestof public.

The 1985-batch IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre wasappointed as the Assam's Director General of Police in April 2018.

Saikia, who happens to be a doctorate degree holder from the Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati, has published nearly 20 short stories and also received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his story collection Akashar Chhabi Aru Anyanya Galpa in 2015.

Earlier, speculations were going on that a former All Assam Students Union (AASU) leader and Intelligence Bureau veteran, Tapan Deka, will take over as the new DGP of Assam Police after Saikia's retirement.
