The complete draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published in Assam at 10 am on Monday, and nearly 40 lakh names did not find themselves in the draft list.

State NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela revealed that 2.89 crore people's names have been incorporated out of the 3.29 applicants and that no actions like arrests and deportation would be taken and people would get time to file their objections. In the first draft of the NRC 1.9 crore out of 3.29 crore applicants were published.

There are multiple ways in which a citizen can check their name in the draft list. Citizens within the state can find their names through a toll-free number or online through website such as www.nrcassam.nic.in, assam.mygov.in, and assam.gov.in. People can also visit the NRC Seva Kendras for the information.

The Ministry of Home Affairs had asked the state government on July 25 to maintain law and order during the entire event. Elaborate security was deployed by the centre to ensure the preservation of peace in Assam and its neighbouring states.

Earlier, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sononwal also had addressed the media saying that people would be given opportunities to file claims and objections, if anybody's name does not appear in the draft.

The Assam Accord was signed by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1985, and mentions that those who cannot prove that they came to Assam before March 24, 1971, will be deleted from electoral rolls.
