A new page was added to the history of Northeast India and its connectivity with international countries as the first ever flight to Singapore from Guwahati took off from the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) airport at 8.35 AM on Saturday.

The new flight, under Bhutan based DrukAir's Royal Bhutan Airlines, was officially inaugurated by Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal on August 30 in presence of dignitaries and officials from Bhutan.

The flight is aimed at increasing connectivity between the northeastern states and ASEAN countries. The connectivity also boosts the present government's ActEast policy.

During the launch, CM Sonowal said the initiative is historic one and expressed his deep appreciation to the Royal Government of Bhutan and Drukair – Royal Bhutan Airlines, for the endeavor to connect Guwahati directly with Singapore.

"The initiative would not only facilitate trade and people-to-people contact among Bhutan, Assam and Singapore but also contribute towards strengthening social, cultural and economic ties", the cM added.

Previously, DrukAir introduced bi-weekly Guwahati-Bangkok flights in 2015 making it the first international flight service from LGBI airport. However, the services did last long.
